儒林外史中的严监生和严贡生分析

　　严监生和严贡生是怎样的人？
　　严贡生和严监生是兄弟俩，严贡生是哥哥，监生是弟弟。这严贡生名叫严大位，贡生是他的身份；严监生叫严大育，监生也是他的身份。这兄弟俩是广东高要县人，是范进的老乡（老乡实际上是指同一个省而非同一个乡的人）。
　　监生在之前说过，类似于生员秀才的同等学力，但不需要考，是花钱买的，而且非常贵；贡生类似，大致相当于举人的同等学力，但它既不是考的也不是买的，而是所谓择优推荐的。推荐对象主要是那些万年考不中举的老秀才们。永远中不了举，但每次岁考又都能考在一、二等内，对于这种悲催的人，国家给一条生路，让他们通过推荐拔贡，获得类似于举人的待遇，去吏部报道，通过考试后，可以被分配一个比举人档次略低的官。同时贡生也可以继续参加乡试，考中后成为真正的举人，进而再去会试和殿试，成为进士。但多数贡生被拔贡后已经没那个心气了，很少有继续考试的。
　　绝大多数的举人都不愿意直接去吏部报道等待考官，而是继续磕进士头衔。这是因为以举人身份当官，官职小，起点低，升迁慢；很可能还不如再咬牙熬几年考上进士来得划算。只有那些觉得自己基本上不可能中进士的人，才会中举后就去当官。比如：著名清官海瑞先生。海瑞一开始的官职是福建延平府南平县教谕。教谕是公办学校的正式教师，只是名义上也算公务员编制而已，并无权利，职位是正八品，年薪40两比薛家集民办乡村小学的教师待遇也没好多少。举人尚且如此，贡生能被委派的官职就更差一些了，一般是训导，这是教谕的助手，从八品，年薪大约35两左右吧。
　　贡生主要是从那些万年考不中举的老秀才里则品学兼优的人推荐而成的。但各省市县里万年不中举的老秀才多了去了，谁比谁更品学兼优一些却很难判断。所以贡生推荐主要靠熬年头（当然各种后门黑幕也不可避免），只要你命够长，中秀才20年后，通常怎么能也熬成贡生。这方法虽然貌似荒唐，但已经是相对最公平的了。因此贡生又往往被俗称岁贡，这岁字真是辛酸。
　　因此，从严贡生和严监生这兄弟俩的头衔可以看出，哥哥早年考中过秀才，学问多少还是有点；弟弟没有中过秀才，但比较有钱又比较仰慕学问不然他就捐不起监生或不会去捐监生。
　　这严家兄弟俩是分了家的，在两个房子里住，有各自不相干的田地家产。在封建社会，分家后的兄弟俩在名义上已经是两家人了，彼此是没有连带责任的，当然实际情况永远是另一回事。
　　严贡生是个恶棍，横行霸道，鱼肉乡里，是高要县一霸。有时候要想成为一霸，并不需要有什么强大的势力和惊人的后台，只要身体素质基本过关，外加足够不讲理就行。《水浒》里的镇关西郑大官人，不过是个还要亲自杀猪卖肉的屠夫，已经可以逼良为娼。不幸碰上更强壮和混不吝的鲁智深，三拳就将这著名恶霸打死了。严贡生之所以能成为高要一霸，原因和镇关西郑屠也差不多。首先，他是个当地知名的老秀才，一般人对于读书识字的相公，多少都有两分尊敬；其次，他个性残忍狠毒，脸厚心黑，蛮不讲理，一般人对这种个性的人，也不愿过多招惹；再次，他有5个（足足5个！）像生狼一般和他个性一模一样但更加年轻力壮的儿子。这5个儿子和他同心协力，和别人只要一言不合，就大打出手。6个穷凶极恶的壮年男子，形成了一股实实在在的势力，使得他成了当地一霸。
　　而他弟弟严监生和他正好相反，严监生没进过学，不算是朝廷认证的统治阶级成员，和普通群众的区别只在于他也识字；他个性懦弱胆小，心地善良又不太有主意；他身体素质很一般，同时又只有一个才3岁的小儿子，没人能在物理上给他撑腰。于是，本来是同胞兄弟的严监生和严贡生在乡里的待遇截然不同，哥哥几乎是鬼见愁，谁见他都宁可绕着走；弟弟却像是大肥肉，谁见他都想咬一口。
　　严贡生是在范进去找汤知县借钱的路上遇见的。汤知县是广东省高要县的知县，同时是范进参加乡试（举人考试）时的主考官，范进在他手里中了举，就算是他的学生了。范进中举后他娘过于激动欢喜，去世了。导致他三年不能当官不能考试，这三年间的生活费颇成问题。于是和同县的张举人张静斋一起去找老师借钱，或者蹭点好处。
　　范进和张静斋都是番禹县人，对高要多少有点人生地不熟。他们遇见的第一个人就是貌似相貌堂堂、知书达理的严贡生，严贡生与他们热情攀谈，自称和汤知县是极好的朋友，还暗示汤知县想给自己二儿子说媒其实汤知县根本不认识他，都没听说过这个人。骗子都是这样，根本没影儿的事儿他说得言之凿凿，时间、地点、人物、事件全都清清楚楚，让你想不信都难。严贡生之所以能横行乡里，跟他随时都特别坦然的打着汤知县的旗号也有点关系。
　　不过严贡生的运气稍差了一点，他正在说自己多么受历任知县爱戴，说汤知县如何手下人都是自己的心腹的时候。家里派来了一个蓬头垢面连鞋都没穿的小厮，对他说老爷，早上关的那口猪，人家来讨要了，正在家里吵呢，家里让你回去。真丢脸，不过后面的更丢脸严贡生说他要猪，拿钱来。不开眼的小厮说他说猪是他的。这下连范进和张静斋脸上都挂不住了，连忙说，既然您家里有事，还是赶快回去吧。严贡生一边走还要一边回头说哎呀你们不知道，这猪本来是我家的！汤知县的好朋友行事如此，连带着汤知县的形象也猥琐了不少，毕竟这时候，谁也不知道汤知县其实根本不认识他啊！
