　　丧失了是非观念，陷入麻木不仁的状态而不自知
　　周进，对科举考试极为热衷至痴狂，可惜人到花甲却连个秀才都没中。后几个商人出于怜悯，凑钱帮这个可怜的老头儿捐了个监生。周进欣喜不已，后来借着监生的身份，他居然中了举人，接着又中了进士。
　　怎么评价周进
　　这一节是《儒林外史》中名篇，足以和范进中举媲美。作者以其神来之笔，描绘了士人被科举制拨弄地神魂颠倒的可悲可怜可笑之处。由于前面用周进所受的种种屈辱做铺垫，揭示了其久不得志的心境，醉心功名而功名无望，撞板一段就显得水到渠成，毫不突兀。
　　实际上，周进和紧接着出场的范进两人一个悲伤地要寻死，一个高兴地发了疯的细节，都寄寓了无限深意。
　　作者揭示出科举制弱化了知识分子的生存能力，使他们深受万般皆下品，唯有读书高（《神童诗》）的观念毒害。中举是他们唯一的生活目标，八股是他们唯一的生活技能。科场若不如意，就再无其它谋生本领。周进宁可撞板，因为他深知：除了科举，自己无法自食其力。

　　吴敬梓当然不是要写一个知识改变命运的传奇故事，实际上，周进的喜剧性结局大大加强了讽刺力量。这种悲喜交融的美学风格，显示了滑稽的现实背后隐藏着的悲剧性内蕴，瞬间的可笑蕴含着永恒的悲哀。
