　　宋（960～1279）是中国历史上继五代十国后由赵氏建立的朝代。960年在开封建国，1127年政权南迁后建都临安（今浙江杭州）1279年被元灭亡。习惯上称1127年前的宋代为北宋。1127年后的宋代为南宋。
　　蒙古南侵始于宋端平二年（窝阔台汗七年），即公元1235年。（事实上1234年宋理宗欲趁蒙古灭金大军北归，收复三京东京开封，西京洛阳，南京商丘，却被蒙古所败）1235年蒙军便对南宋兴师问罪。蒙古军分路进攻四川与襄汉，被击退。三年，蒙古军再攻四川，绝大部分州县失陷。蒙古军又占领襄阳。淳佑二年（1242），余玠出任四川安抚制置使，屡次击退蒙古军的侵扰，但未能恢复全蜀。宝佑六年（1258），蒙哥汗大举侵宋，兵临合州钓鱼山城下，开庆元年（1259），宋将王坚率军民死守钓鱼城重创蒙古军，蒙哥战死于军中（该年8月，蒙古军中痢疫盛行，蒙哥亦染此病，被迫回师，10余天后死于合州钓鱼山下）。贾似道私自暗中求和，愿意向蒙古称臣纳贡，双方划长江为界。攻打鄂州（今湖北武汉市武昌）的忽必烈已知蒙哥汗死讯，急欲北返，争夺皇位，遂答应贾似道的议和条件而撤兵。！东京开封，西京洛阳，南京商丘
　　《射雕英雄传》中后期的战争主要是描述宋元战争史上的襄樊之战。宋咸淳四年（1268），忽必烈命刘整、阿术等率军围困襄阳和樊城（今湖北襄樊）。次年，又派丞相史天泽前往规划。蒙古军在襄、樊四周修城筑围，封锁汉水，控扼水陆要冲；造战船，练水军；并屡败南宋援军。咸淳六年，李庭芝任京湖制置大使，督师援襄，屡战不利。襄、樊长期被围断援，供饷困难。而宋度宗和权相贾似道却无心援救。咸淳八年，李庭芝移驻郢州（今湖北钟祥），于襄阳西北清泥河修寨造船，募民兵，以张顺、张贵为都统制。五月，张顺、张贵率舟师顺流而下，冲破元军拦截，抵达襄阳。激战中，张顺牺牲。张贵入襄后，派人潜回郢州，郢将与之约定派军驻龙尾洲接应。至期，张贵率军突围，但龙尾洲已为元军所据。宋军仓卒接战，大败。张贵重伤被俘，至死不屈。咸淳九年正月，樊城被元军攻破。元军又攻襄阳。二月，宋将吕文焕以襄阳降元。

　　郭杨两家指腹为婚，后为金兵所害。郭啸天死，其妻流落蒙古，诞下一子郭靖，在蒙古成长，后被江南七怪收为徒弟，并得全真教丹阳子马钰指点内功。杨铁心妻子被大金国六王爷骗婚，诞下一子杨康，却自幼被当做小王爷抚养长大。
