　　歌神张学友有一首《只愿一生爱一人》的情歌，旋律优美，感人切切。吴敬梓笔下《儒林外史》一书中的老秀才王玉辉，他专注于读书写字，为了出版自己的写的三本书，可谓殚精竭虑。倘或用歌曲唱诵其行为，只愿一生为出书，可以形象的描绘出王玉辉的心境。
　　余大就任徽州府学训导，王玉辉前去拜会。闲谈中，王玉辉向余大介绍自己写的三部书。这三部书为《礼书》、《字书》、《乡约书》，都是些教人们知书达理的礼教和文化知识内容的教科书。王玉辉虽家境贫寒，但他挺有才学，他写这三部书，初衷挺好，为的是教育他人，教化天下。
　　王玉辉的女婿病死了，他的女儿悲痛过度，要殉节。女儿的公婆两个听了儿媳妇这句话，惊得泪如雨下，认为儿媳妇气疯了，劝慰儿媳妇不要想不开。这时，王玉辉出人意料的同意女儿殉节，还说出一套自古‘心去意难留’，这是青史上留名的事，并安排女儿与母亲作别。公婆两个和王玉辉的老婆都不同意女儿殉节，认为王玉辉越老越呆了。王玉辉则说这样事你们是不晓得的。女儿执意殉节，王玉辉也坚决支持。真是父女一样的，都够固执的，为了所谓青史上留名，不惜赴死。
　　女儿痴迷于贞烈，饿了八日死了。倘若不是王玉辉的赞同，他的女儿不至于死不回头。在家里只晓得看书写字的王玉辉，他满脑子封建礼教，被这些礼教束缚，死板的尊崇。孔子虽然推崇周礼，但孔老夫子活学活用。孔子师徒周游列国，他们被困陈国，断粮七日。为了生存，当时孔子也是饥不择食的，他吃了弟子不知何处讨来的肉和饭。在脱离苦难之后，生活安定后，孔子方才拿起周礼说教，才讲究肉不方，不食；席不正，不坐。王玉辉太死板，他的女儿死的太可惜，太不值得了。虽然，女儿被送入祠堂做了烈女，又能怎样？人死不能复生，烈女终究是个虚名。通学人不过夸赞王玉辉生这样好女儿，为伦纪生色。之后，众人在明伦堂吃了酒，散了。此刻的王玉辉，已经迂腐的疯癫了。
　　王玉辉如此做，他是傻了，老糊涂了。实则，王玉辉一点不傻，也不老糊涂。清贫一生的他，科举不中，埋头著书立说。女儿贞烈，使他成了烈女之父，有了名气。如此，王玉辉要趁着人气正旺，趁热打铁的出版那三部书了。的确，王玉辉和他的女儿，都按照和遵循《礼书》、《乡约书》的。有了女儿贞烈事迹的广告效应，王玉辉的三部书不愁无人理会。
　　为了出书，王玉辉来南京找虞博士、杜少卿、迟衡山、武正字等，这些都是当地的文士名流的，王玉辉在出书上，脑筋不坏，知道用名人效应。在南京，碰巧虞博士、杜少卿、迟衡山、武正字的都不在，王玉辉暂居在牛公庵。住的时间长了，王玉辉盘缠用完，他要回徽州，就把书子交给同乡邓质夫，希望邓质夫代为转交给虞博士、杜少卿、迟衡山、武正字等。三部书，是王玉辉呕心沥血之作，也是他唯一有机会成名的作品，看来是必须出版的。
　　王玉辉醉迷封建礼教，急切于出版自己的三部书。为此，他不惜拿女儿的性命作为赌注，来宣扬自己尊崇的礼教，推销自己的书。他与前面偷梁换柱、沽名钓誉的蘧公孙、牛浦的目的一样，都是利用出书这一方式，想在文人学士中出出名，博得他人的敬重。为此，蘧公孙险些牵连坐牢，牛浦则被牛布衣的老婆告到了官府。王玉辉代价最大，他的女儿因此殉节。吴敬梓接二连三的描写那些依靠出书博得虚名的文人，已不单单的嘲讽意味，而是深刻的指出明清时期的文人的虚浮与社会风气都已经坏骨子里，难以救治了。
