　　余家兄弟的人物形象及主要事迹
　　五河县的余有达、余有重，人称余大、余二，这弟兄两个，严守祖训，闭门读书，不讲求隔壁帐的势力，也就是说他们不是势利小人。因而，余家弟兄两个，品行、文章是从古没有的。这里，吴敬梓有些言过其实了，余家弟兄品行、文章再好，也不可能达到从古没有，即达到前无古人的地步。如此，此二人早已高中举人、进士，或者被推举为孝廉了。
　　余大、余二弟兄两个相处的不错，二人头脑聪颖，说话做事的，有条理，讲分寸。家中父母亡故十几年没有安葬，又适逢科举考试。经商议，余二到凤阳府里参加科考，余大去无为州到知州州尊那里打秋风，为父母丧葬寻求资助。余二到凤阳科考，考了一等第二名。余大到无为州州尊那里打秋风，收获不小，得到一百三十多两银子。这弟兄俩挺能干。
　　返乡途中，余大路过南京，他来到表弟杜少卿家。如今的杜少卿真是穷了，用钱需要当东西，他无钱资助余大。为了不亏待表兄，杜少卿就摆了一桌酒席，找来当地名士迟衡山、武正字同坐。席间，余大谈到寻地葬父母的事，迟衡山、武正字说了一些风水见闻。
　　在杜少卿家住了几日，余大收到余二的来信，信中说余二时下正有一件事在这里办着，让余大千万不要回家。余大一头雾水，不过他相信自己弟弟，就回了一封信，继续住在杜少卿家。原来，余大在无为州打秋风，获得那一百三十两银子是赃银。州尊为了给余大弄些银子，就一桩人命案，让余大为嫌疑犯风影，替他说过。说过，大概指的辩护。余大文采好，写个辩护词，替人辩护的，应当不成问题。余大辩护，州尊准了。事后，风影备有酒席，共出赃银四百两，三人均分，余大获得了一百三十多两银子。看来，这风影杀人是真，州尊徇私枉法，余大出面做伪证乘机捞取好处费。
　　风影大概是江洋大盗，杀人抢劫的。余大参与下，风影无罪释放了。之后，风影再次犯罪入狱，他供出了以前的事。官府追究，发了缉拿官文。余大做伪证分赃银事实很清楚，缉拿起来应当很容易。然而，可笑的是，无为州州衙下的官文，居然将余大余二的名字写错了，认定余二为作伪证分赃银的。余二何等聪明，他察觉余大作伪证收赃银的事是真的，一旦余大回家必然被抓去坐牢。既然官文上写的是余二的名字，余二索性就承揽下来，一个死不承认，就行了。
　　经过两三次县衙问询，余二写了两次呈子喊冤，又拿出当时自己到凤阳府参加科考的证明材料。知县一看事件确系与余二无关，就回复无为州，恐系外乡光棍，顶名冒姓，理合据实回明，证明余二无罪。无为州的乌龙公文，五河县知县的草草结案，使得作伪证的余大，平平安安的获得一百三十多两赃银。
　　如若碰到精细知县，可以派人仔细调查余二的家庭背景和社会关系。那么，余大就难脱干系。风影行贿赃银一案，州尊看来是没有被牵连。错认余二的乌龙公文，也是州尊安排人书办故意写错的。因为，一旦余大被拿到后，审讯拷问的，余大会把州尊招供出来的。为了自己的乌纱帽，州尊自然不会希望余大被真的缉拿。五河县知县一本正经的审讯余二，也是在作秀。知县深通官场规则，他配合州尊把乌龙戏演的更加逼真圆满。
　　作伪证获得大笔赃银的余大、余二，他们的日子过得也并不太平。在看过风水，选好墓地后，这弟兄两个本想到凌风家吃酒洗澡，遇到凌家失盗，乱作一团。他二人又来虞家，那知虞家的酒席也散了。他们只好回自己家吃自己的酒，不想那二斤酒和六个盘子，已是娘娘们吃了，只剩了个空壶、空盘子在那里。三处吃酒，处处吃不成，这弟兄俩今个够衰的。那料想，更衰的事还在后边。夜晚大火，家里的两间房子烧了，父母的灵柩只好停放到街上。安葬了父母，余大给表弟虞华轩家做私塾，年薪四十两。后来，余大选了徽州府学训导。余二反而悄无声息了。
