　　沈琼枝的主要事迹及人物形象
　　沈先生从青枫城回到常州，他送女儿到江都县完婚。沈先生的女儿沈琼枝要嫁给当地的盐商宋为富为妻。盐业生意在明清时期，实行的由户部掌管，官府指定代理人的专卖制度。盐税是明清时期重要的税收来源。能够做盐业生意的，都是与官府有关联的人。这位宋盐商，自然是不一般，他做专卖盐业生意的，收入颇丰，家道殷实。沈先生把女儿嫁给盐商，也为的是攀富贵。
　　既然是娶亲，宋盐商应当择吉日迎娶沈琼枝。怎料，沈先生父女到了江都县，在通报了宋盐商后，宋盐商只是打发个家人来吩咐把新娘直接抬到府里去了事，全然没有婚庆的热闹场面。沈先生发觉上了当，他劝告女儿做不了正室可以悔婚。老妈子把沈先生的不满，告诉了宋盐商。宋盐商听了很不以为然。他说，像他这样的总商人家（盐业专卖），一年至少娶七八个妾的，没必要像娶妻一样热闹铺张。看来，沈琼枝是给宋盐商做小妾的。沈先生父女一定是上了媒婆的当了。倘若，没有媒婆的吹嘘，沈先生那会轻易将女儿嫁人。媒婆骗人，并不罕见。鲍廷玺被媒婆说成举人，他骗婚成了。
　　沈先生写了呈子（状纸）到江都县县衙告状，状告宋盐商骗婚。知县收受了宋盐商的贿赂，驳回了沈先生的诉状。沈先生不服，又补了一个呈子，继续告。知县大怒，派两个差人把沈先生押解回常州。沈先生一时糊涂，轻信媒婆，把女儿的一生幸福断送了。
　　估计这宋盐商，他是要等到沈先生告他骗婚之事平息以后，再去理会沈琼枝。有其父必有其女，沈先生不甘心受欺骗告了状。他的女儿沈琼枝也不是吃干饭，而甘受屈辱的。在宋家过了几天，不见消息，沈琼枝就来了个卷包会，她把室内的金银器皿、真珠首饰的，打了一个包袱，还穿了七八条裙子。这沈琼枝真够狠的，她是能带走的尽量带走了。七八条裙子，她是如何穿到身上的？沈琼枝颇有心机，她买通了那丫鬟，五更时分，从后门走了。
　　沈琼枝逃到了南京，她在哪里开了店铺，卖顾绣，写扇作诗的。顾绣原是宋朝的一种宫廷刺绣。到了明朝，尚保宝司丞顾名世的长子顾箕英之妾缪瑞云，她擅长宋绣，因而称作顾绣。缪氏在针法运用、配色和材料选配等方面有不少创新和发展，顾绣也称作缪氏刺绣。沈琼枝开店卖顾绣，看来她也是一位刺绣行家。
　　杜少卿遇到沈琼枝之前，他在游秦淮河时，遇到了庄濯江。庄濯江是位商人，他和杜少卿一样也是乐善好施之人。不过，庄濯江与杜少卿挥金如土的布施行为不同。庄濯江比杜少卿有头脑，他是顺其自然的帮助别人，常给自己留有退路的。两万金与典当生意送与别人，是个大手笔，常人做不到的，庄濯江之所以如此做，他是熟悉楚越一带的生意行情，懂得如何做生意，也就有了退路。至于，安葬死去的老朋友，拿出三四千银子修曹武惠王庙，这些都是庄濯江在力所能及的前提下，所做的善事。
　　沈琼枝在南京做生意，受到恶少欺负。当她与恶少争吵时，被来看热闹的杜少卿救了。来到杜少卿家中，沈琼枝说明了自己本是宋盐商的妾，因为对婚姻不满而离家出走的事，她向杜少卿求救。
　　沈琼枝的不辞而别，宋盐商告状到江都县县衙，知县派差人来南京缉捕沈琼枝。杜少卿无力干预他人婚姻，他就资助沈琼枝四两银子。沈琼枝离开杜少卿家，随着差人回江都县去了。回江都县的路上，差人要敲诈沈琼枝。沈琼枝拒绝，并乘机逃跑。在被拿回来后，沈琼枝不服软，她和差人就吵了起来。差人勒索不成，反被羞辱。无奈，差人只得继续用轿子把沈琼枝抬回江都县。
　　描写沈琼枝的故事，吴敬梓是在极力拓宽写作的线索思路。沈琼枝贪图富贵和家庭地位，嫁给宋盐商。当发觉受骗后，她毅然不辞而别的离家出走了。这些虽然不合乎封建礼教的男尊女卑的夫权意识，显得沈琼枝很大胆很叛逆的，但也道出了沈琼枝不甘忍受屈辱，不甘心坐那没有名分的小妾的心声。吴敬梓笔下的沈琼枝比较周进、范进等只懂得科举官场的人来说，她行为不高尚，偷窃财物是不对的。然而她决然的离家出走，敢于和纠缠的恶少争吵，拒绝并奚落差人的勒索，古时的女子几人能如此？这些足可以说明沈琼枝的不同寻常了。
