　　云片糕已经吃了，船家无法查实。实则，船家若是到严贡生家走一趟，就可戳穿其谎言。一个被吃空败空的家，严贡生从哪里来的几百两银子，去做那人参黄连的云片糕？！
　　船家被严贡生唬住了，十二两的船费，因此黄了，要不到了。掌舵的船夫，也许因此被严贡生害死了。吴敬梓生活在清朝前期的康乾盛世，这是十二两银子是有说法的。十二两银子，相当于清朝前期，江南劳动力市场，织工四分一工一年的工钱。四分一工者，是织工中工资最高的。掌舵的船夫一年收入估计也就是五六两银子。十二两银子，最少也得两到三年挣。也就是说，因为几片云片糕，掌舵船夫两三年的活白干了。严贡生之奸诈恶损，非一般读书人，能做到想象到的。
　　回到家里，赵氏与严贡生商议过继儿子事宜。赵氏认养严贡生的儿子，实际是变相将家业交给了严贡生。这本是求之不得好事。那知严贡生心里有自己的算盘，他不愿过继儿子给赵氏。反过来，严贡生让自己刚结婚的儿子儿媳来占赵氏的房子，催促赵氏搬房。赵氏和他闹，严贡生发出狠话，要将赵氏找媒人领出发嫁。严贡生的想要霸占赵氏家产的用心，显现出来。
　　赵氏和严贡生因为认养儿子的事情，打官司到县衙。汤知县同情赵氏，严贡生的官司打输了。严贡生不善罢甘休，又到省城告，又输了。而后，他又想到京师联络学道周进，打赢官司。看来，为了牟取家产，严贡生是不择手段的。后来官司如何打的，吴敬梓没有描写，只是借胡三公子的口说了，官司的结局。严贡生的二儿子过继给赵氏，家产三七分。赵氏得了三分，严贡生得了七分。虽没有独霸家产，严贡生最终还是占了大便宜。
