儒林外史周进的人物形象看周进的时来运转

　　周进是薛家集的作馆先生，他家境贫寒，仕途不顺，六十多岁了，连个秀才也没中的。如此，他虽然年近古稀，在秀才、举人面前，依然被称呼为小友。
　　薛家集虽是个百十来户的普通村子，然村子里的人有个逢年过节聚会议公事的规矩。村口的观音庵，是村民议事的场所。在议过龙灯上庙之事后，为头的申祥甫提议在观音庵开个学馆，为村里的孩子办个学堂。县衙当差的夏甲总推荐周进为学馆的先生。这样，周进开始了作馆生活。
　　六十多岁的周进，贫穷寒酸，虽然没有中秀才，但他很注重读书人之间的尊卑礼节。凡遇秀才、举人在场，他依序坐在下首位。这次要被请为作馆先生，周进因为有集上新进学（新中秀才）的梅玖在场，他客气一番，不敢上坐。周进的此番举动，使人不禁想到了鲁迅先生的名作《孔乙己》。
　　孔乙己读过书，最终没有中过秀才。他每天混迹在咸亨酒店，与短衣衫的体力劳动者打交道。因为识文断字的，孔乙己就居高临下的在这些不怎么识字的短衣帮们面前，之乎者也的拽文，卖弄学问，以此来满足自己的虚荣心。虽然很贫穷，孔乙己读书人的架子端的板正，自认高人一等的读书人的尊卑礼节，他是不会丢弃的。《儒林外史》的周进，他的言辞举止，真切的反映在孔乙己身上。
　　学馆开办了一年，周进被辞退了。原因有两个，一个是学生们淘气，不好好学；二是周进不会管理学生，只会耐着性子坐着教导。村民们嫌周进教的不好，夏甲总也嫌周进呆头呆脑的，推荐他为作馆先生，不知道来送礼承谢的。如此，周进被辞退，失业了。
　　为了混口饭吃，周进听了姊丈金有余的劝说，他给几个做大生意的同村人当了记账的，随着一通道省城去。若说，周进失去了作馆先生的安稳职业，年纪一大把的跟着生意人东奔西跑的，生活够悲惨的了。那知，正是因为如此到了省城，周进时来运转，人生由此转折。
　　周进痛哭贡院，感动了那四位做生意的客人。四位客人凑了二百多两银子，上了藩库，讨出库收来。恰巧宗师来省城录遗，许是捐的银子多的缘故，周进被录为贡监首卷。录遗指的是，秀才参加乡试前的一次资格考试，属于乡试前的补考。周进秀才不是的，他如何有资格参加录遗？看来，那二百多两银子，是为周进买了个秀才资格。那个所谓库收，大约是秀才文凭。明清时的秀才学历，大概也可以买到的。
　　有了秀才资格，周进参加了补遗考试。真是万事开头难，一旦有了突破，那将是一顺百顺。补遗顺利通过，周进的省城乡试通过，中了举人；赴京城的会试也很顺畅，中了进士，殿在三甲，估计最次也是中了探花。后来，周进被钦点为广东学道，开始了仕途生涯。
　　命运多囧的周进，穷困潦倒，六十多岁年纪一大把的，那个能想象得到他后来会中举人、中进士的。如果，周进像孔乙己那样的混日月，不思进取，他最终也不会得到如此机会。看来，时运难以琢磨，只要你坚持不放弃，也许在不经意间会得到命运的垂青。
